Tata Steel Receives Major Relief of Rs 385.19 Crore Coal Mining Dispute

Tata Steel, on Saturday, informed about a major relief given by the revisional authority in an ongoing coal mining dispute with the Jharkhand authorities.

Background of Case

The matter is related to a demand notice issued by the District Mining Officer, Dhanbad, Jharkhand, raising an amount of Rs 385.19 crore for the period Financial Year 2000-01 to FY 2016-17. The DMO claimed that the company’s collieries at Jharia had produced excess coal, which was more than the allowed limits.

The notice was challenged before the Revisional Authority, Ministry of Coal, Government of India, by Tata Steel. As per the latest update in the case, the Revisional Authority in its order dated March 24, 2026, has stopped the state authorities from taking any coercive steps against Tata Steel during the pendency of revision applications filed by the company.

Financial Impact

Tata Steel has said that there are no expected financial implications as of the current date. The order issued by the revisional authority provides temporary relief to the company in its ongoing coal-mining dispute.
