MeitY Revises Product Category Under CRS; Standalone HDD Compliance Effective November 2026

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated 05.05.2026 to amend the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

As per this amendment, the description of the product at Serial No. 50 has been changed to “Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)“. These products are covered under IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010, which addresses the safety requirements for information technology equipment.

The notification further states that the USB-type External Hard Disk Drives will continue to be governed by the existing provisions already applicable to them. There are no modifications to her compliance requirements.

However, all other standalone Hard Disk Drives will be subject to the provisions of the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) of the 2021 Order from 5 November 2026.
